Why We Do It
The Visual Snow Initiative is an extension of The Visual Snow Conference held May 5th 2018 at UCSF. The Visual Snow Conference was established to shine a light on Visual Snow by raising awareness and understanding for those whose lives are directly affected by this condition.
Visual Snow sounds like it’s harmless, but it is not. It affects people of all ages, but mostly young people in their teens and 20’s. Their eyes are perfect but their world looks far different. Without warning or cause, people with Visual Snow see the world in an overlay of hundreds of tiny moving dots across their field of vision, as well as other disturbing images.
Nobody knows the cause. The images are a 24/7 battle with the eyes open or closed. Research indicates that Visual Snow is a neurological problem, meaning the problem originates in the brain, not the eyes. This would explain why eye tests come back normal for patients with Visual Snow and why it is so difficult for doctors to diagnose.
We need awareness and knowledge to replace unnecessary medical tests. Visual Snow can be traumatic and isolating. We are working on understanding the condition and finding a cure.
What we see in our world we often take for granted…those with Visual Snow cannot.
“I was determined not to let Visual Snow stifle my ambition. I did not want this circumstance to turn me into a person I wasn’t.”
Sierra Domb, Founder
Help Raise Awareness
Let’s start working together to build awareness and education for the medical community and those dealing with Visual Snow. Then and only then can we move forward towards a cure.
