Researchers from the University of Hail surveyed 343 adults in Saudi Arabia to learn more about the prevalence of VSS, the symptoms people experience, and public awareness of the condition. Participants filled out an online questionnaire that asked about visual symptoms, medical history, lifestyle factors, and how symptoms affected their daily lives.
The findings revealed that 3.8% of participants met the symptom-based criteria for Visual Snow Syndrome, putting Saudi Arabia well within the range reported by previous international studies, which estimated prevalence between 2% and 5%.

Awareness Remains Incredibly Important
One of the most striking findings was that few people were aware of Visual Snow Syndrome.
Only 12.8% of participants said they were familiar with VSS prior to taking the survey. Even more notable was the source of that awareness. Most participants who were aware of the condition had learned about it through television, the internet, or social media rather than from healthcare professionals.
This finding reflects a common challenge reported by people with VSS. Many patients spend years looking for answers before receiving a diagnosis, often because the condition is unknown to the general public and some healthcare providers. Raising awareness among medical professionals and the general public may help reduce diagnostic delays and improve access to appropriate care.

What Symptoms Were Most Common?
The study examined several symptoms commonly associated with VSS. Although visual snow itself is the defining feature of the condition, researchers found that other visual disturbances were reported even more frequently.
The most commonly reported symptoms included:
- Afterimages (palinopsia): 32.7%
- Photophobia (light sensitivity): 30.6%
- Visual snow/static: 13.1%
- Difficulty seeing at night (nyctalopia): 10.2%
Many participants reported experiencing multiple symptoms at the same time. Some experienced combinations of visual snow, afterimages, photophobia, and night vision difficulties, reflecting the complex nature of the syndrome.

- Depression: 5%
