New Study from the University of Melbourne Explores Optometrists’ Role in Recognizing and Managing Visual Snow Syndrome

Home >

Researchers Cassandra Brooks, Dr. Bao Nguyen, and Professor Allison McKendrick from the University of Melbourne and the University of Western Australia/Lions Eye Institute have launched a new study aimed at understanding how optometrists recognize and manage Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS).

In the Australian healthcare system, optometrists are primary eye care providers and play a key role in facilitating the appropriate care of people with VSS. However, given the relative recency of VSS as a recognised condition, it is unclear whether optometrists have sufficient knowledge of VSS to guide appropriate care.

The project will survey optometrists in Australia to assess:

  • The current state of knowledge about Visual Snow Syndrome
  • Clinical practice behaviours when treating patients with VSS symptoms
  • Education needs within the Australian optometry workforce related to VSS

The goal is to build a stronger evidence base around clinical awareness and response strategies among optometrists.

As a next step, the team plans to use insights from this research to develop targeted educational materials for eye care professionals. These resources will be designed to increase confidence in recognizing VSS symptoms and promote consistent, informed approaches to care.
