In this interview, Rick opens up about his personal journey, what inspired him to establish AnCan, and how, during one of the support group sessions hosted by the Visual Snow Initiative (VSI), he discovered that he had Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS).
Together, VSI and AnCan created the first video chat support group dedicated to individuals affected by VSS. This welcoming, judgment-free space allows people with VSS and their loved ones to connect face-to-face, share experiences, and support one another in a friendly virtual environment.
Rick reflects on what makes this partnership meaningful, how peer support helps reduce feelings of isolation, and why it’s so important to create spaces where individuals can speak openly about their experiences. He also shares insights from his own journey, including:
- How he came to recognize his VSS symptoms and the ways they’ve shaped his life
- Strategies and routines that help him manage daily challenges
- Lessons learned from moderating the VSS Support Group with AnCan and VSI
- Feedback from participants and the growing sense of community that has emerged
The unique value of real-time, peer-led support that is understanding, respectful and inclusive.
