Spotlight on: Jacqueline “Jackie”  Bediako  💗

“My story is quite long! I’ve shortened it 🙂

Back in the Spring of 2019, I was under a great deal of stress associated with looking for a new job, and a new home simultaneously.

I suffered what I would call a “thunderstorm headache” as I lay down to go to sleep. Which resulted in my eyes vibrating in their sockets, and severe eye pain that seemed to worsen with smartphone or computer use.

Due to the pain, I had to take time off work, because my work was computer-heavy.

Eventually, I did get help from a neuro-ophthalmologist and was prescribed tinted glasses. Which helped with migraines, eye pain, light sensitivity, and fatigue.

I’m fortunate to have found a specialist and to have a supportive partner/friends/family.

My healing process did take a long time, and for a while just riding a stationary bike at the gym for 20 minutes left me with extreme fatigue. Gradually, my symptoms improved. I also maintained the belief that I would get stronger.

I’m really grateful to use a computer and a cell phone without severe pain. Also deeply appreciative of being able to follow my passion of working with young people with disabilities.

I’m also glad that I had the support of the doctors at SUNY Eye Center in New York City, and my incredible acupuncturist at Five Seasons Healing!

I do things daily to help my symptoms, such as staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, keeping my anxiety levels low, and staying active.

I hope by sharing my experiences, I can help at least 1 person with VSS.”
